Why I'm Building This
Something is missing. I'm capable of building it, so I'm going to.
I grew up in Inglewood. My dad was Inglewood City Fire Department — its own department at the time. We lived there for nine years. I remember walking door to door with him, collecting signatures, petitioning for LA County to take over fire services. I saw that one man can make a change.
We were the family that lived inside Inglewood, and he worked for Inglewood City Fire Department. It felt personal. His next station was Malibu. Zuma Beach. Where he spent the rest of his career protecting that coastline as a firefighter paramedic.
As a young EMT, I started at McCormick Ambulance in Inglewood. I worked at Centinela Hospital, also in Inglewood. I did my paramedic internship at Fire Station 171 — right back in the same city that raised me. I gave everything I had back to that community.
Now I'm giving it to my Malibu, Zuma Beach, Point Dume community. I've been in EMS for 15 years. The Woolsey Fire. The Palisades. Every major disaster that hits this area — responding after a crisis doesn't feel like a job. To me, it feels personal. Like something I need to do.
But every time, I see the same gaps. Parents who can't find their kids. Children with no way to tell a caregiver about their allergies or their specific care instructions. Families separated with no systems to reconnect. The tools that exist aren't built by people who work these scenes. They're built by people who have never used them.
I'm building what's missing. I'm building it to the standard where I know it's safe enough for my own children — because they need it — and safe enough to work in an actual emergency.
